Mazda models are known for being fuel efficient and fun to drive. What doesn’t always get attention, however, is how well they protect passengers. These cars have won numerous awards in this area, and the 2026 Mazda CX-5 recently received a TOP SAFETY PICK+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Lester Glenn Mazda explains why this SUV was singled out and the protection features it offers.
Why the 2026 MAZDA CX-5 is an Award Winner
The IIHS is a well-respected organization that evaluates the safety of vehicles. In particular, it conducts comprehensive crash tests to gauge how a car will do in the event of an accident. In order to qualify for the TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, vehicles need to get a Good rating in the small overlap front, moderate overlap front and side tests. They also need a Good or Acceptable when it comes to headlights. The 2026 Mazda CX-5 achieved that top rating in both areas.
Advanced Safety Systems
Winners of the IIHS award also need to have front crash prevention systems that get a Good in the pedestrian test and an Acceptable or Good in the vehicle-to-vehicle 2.0 test. The 2026 Mazda CX-5 also had the highest ratings here. Along with Forward Collision Warning, it comes with many other built-in components to augment safety, including:
- Automatic Emergency Braking
- Blind-Spot Monitoring
- Lane-Keeping Assist
- Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
