Each year, WardsAuto and its editors honor the ten best engines available on new vehicle models and those that have set themselves apart from the pack. WardsAuto Senior Content Director, Drew Winter, had this to say about the engine:
There are lots of powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engines out there, but [the] Mazda [brand’s] 2.5-liter turbo stands out by using very elegant engineering to create especially smooth and abundant low-end torque for great everyday V6-like performance in a sizable crossover SUV.
The SKYACTIV®-G 2.5T turbocharged engine offers a number of Mazda- and industry-firsts, such as its innovative Dynamic Pressure Turbo, which uses a butterfly valve in the engine’s exhaust to create more pressure at a lower RPM. The result is that the turbocharger spools up almost instantaneously, providing up to 310 lb-ft of torque. Kelvin Hiraishi, director of engineering, MNAO, had this to say about the honor:
